Mermaid In The Garden of Escapism is a short film featuring a young woman escaping from reality. Blending realism and fantasy, the soundscape (with its "nature and forest" sound effects) reinforces the dissonance between the two worlds. The atmosphere is serene, offering the viewer a moment of softness.
Mermaid In The Garden of Escapism is an experimental work in two distinct parts. In its first part, the visual narrative features richly colored photography, featuring various beauty-related accessories (mirror, sumptuous, black dress, jewels, pearls), all filmed in a dialogue-free direction.
Then, in the second half, the film switches to a voice-over, speaking over a black background. The narrator's voice is accompanied by a soberly typed text. Blending poetry and desire, we are carried away by the lyricism of the epistolary text.
More than a story, Mermaid In The Garden of Escapism is an experience with a soaring rhythm, as intended by its director MAO Yu Lynn Yuan.
